Accidentally created Swede Ka Salan today while I was wondering what to do with the swede from my vegbox. I’m sure some of you’ve had the same dilemma! Was trying to recreate the taste of Shalgam Ka Salan which is made with turnip. I have many memories of this humble dish which is plain but tasty at the same time. It was not the same because swede is sweeter but it was actually rather delicious. Here is the recipe if you’re interested.
Ingredients
1 large swede peeled and cut into large cubes
1” ginger, 2 cloves garlic, 1 green chilli and 1 small onion all ground together into a coarse paste
Whole spices: 4 green cardamom pods, 2 bay leaves and 1” cinnamon stick
Handful chopped coriander leaves
Oil
Garam masala
1/2 tsp salt
Method:
Heat 1tbsp oil add whole spices. Stir for 2-3 seconds and add the paste. Cook this on a medium heat until the oil separates from the masala. Now add the swede and salt and stir to coat it in the masala. Lower the heat to a low setting and continue to cook with a lid on until the swede is cooked (about 15 min). Add the coriander and garam masala and cook for another couple of minutes. Serve.
